The Barbet is a gentle and friendly family dog. He is willing to work and therefore requires regular encouragement. Despite all his hunting skills, he is a sensitive dog who struggles with a too firm hand. He is always loyal to his owner and he is reserved towards strangers. The Barbet is very intelligent and balanced.

The hunting instinct of the Barbet is an inherited drive. As with all dog breeds, especially the classic water dogs, this is pronounced to varying degrees. Through regular training, the hunting instinct can be inhibited.
